A série Angelus foi concebida fora do Brasil, durante a residência artística de Juca Máximo no antigo monastério da cidade de Veroli, na Itália — o mesmo onde viveu, por um período, o Papa João Paulo II. Criada em um contexto de profunda conexão com o sagrado e a história cristã, é a única série de sua trajetória realizada integralmente em solo europeu. Simbolicamente, foi levada ao Vaticano para ser abençoada pelo Papa Francisco.
As figuras femininas representadas são inspiradas nas mulheres da cidade: moradoras de pequenos palácios que abrigam as mesmas famílias há cinco gerações. Elas tocam o chão de pedra — literal e simbólico — que sustenta Veroli, cidade moldada por monumentos e ruínas da Igreja Cristã desde o século VI.
O chão branco esculpido com inscrições em latim representa essa fundação espiritual, onde o corpo repousa e a memória da fé resiste. O dourado remete à luz amena das ruas históricas, iluminadas por lustres seculares. Já os cabelos escuros e longos que se expandem em direção ao infinito refletem os desejos e sonhos dessas mulheres, sob o céu escurecido da cidade — um firmamento quase medieval, onde a escuridão não é ausência, mas quietude.

Blessed by Pope Francis at the Vatican
The Angelus series was conceived outside Brazil, during Juca Máximo’s artist residency at an ancient monastery in the city of Veroli, Italy — the same place where Pope John Paul II once lived for a time. Created in a context of deep connection with the sacred and Christian history, it is the only series in his career fully born on European soil. Symbolically, it was taken to the Vatican and blessed by Pope Francis.
The female figures portrayed are inspired by the women of the town: residents of small palaces that have housed the same families for five generations. They touch the stone ground — both literal and symbolic — that sustains Veroli, a city shaped by monuments and ruins of the Christian Church since the 6th century.
The white ground carved with Latin inscriptions represents this spiritual foundation where the body rests and the memory of faith endures. The golden tones reflect the warm light of the historic streets, lit by centuries-old chandeliers. The long black hair expanding into the horizon reflects the dreams and aspirations of these women beneath the darkened sky — a nearly medieval firmament where darkness is not absence, but stillness.

《Angelus》系列诞生于巴西之外，期间Juca Máximo曾在意大利韦罗利市一座古老的修道院进行艺术驻留——那里曾是教皇若望·保禄二世居住过的一处圣地。作品诞生于与神圣与基督教历史深度交融的背景下，是他职业生涯中唯一完全在欧洲土地上创作完成的系列。象征性地，这组作品被带往梵蒂冈，并接受了教皇方济各的祝福。
画中女性形象的灵感来自当地居民——世世代代居住在小宫殿中的女性家庭，已有五代传承。她们触碰着维罗利城市的石质地面——象征性的，也是字面上的，这座城市自6世纪以来由教会的纪念碑和遗迹铸就而成。
刻有拉丁铭文的白色地面象征着精神的基石，身体在其上安息，信仰的记忆得以延续。金色象征着古老街道温和的光芒，那些灯光来自数百年前的吊灯。女性飘逸的黑发延伸向天际，象征着她们的梦想与愿望，在这片中世纪般的夜空之下——黑暗不代表缺失，而是一种静默的存在。
Consectetur Adipiscing
Angelus não é apenas uma série de pinturas. Ela incorpora também instalações feitas com pedras originais do século VI, recolhidas pelas ruas da cidade, conectando matéria e espírito, tempo e gesto.
Angelus is not merely a series of paintings. It also includes installations made with original 6th-century stones gathered from the city, bridging matter and spirit, time and gesture.
《Angelus》不仅仅是一组绘画作品，它还包含了由我在城市中收集的6世纪石块所制作的装置艺术，连接着物质与精神、时间与动作。

Um presente eternizado
Aqui, a arte é prece visual. É presente eternizado no ato da criação — como diz Santo Agostinho:
“O tempo não é três, mas um: o presente do passado, o presente do presente e o presente do futuro.
Os três estão em minha memória, em minha atenção e em minha expectativa.”
Esta série vive nesse tempo presentificado — onde o agora carrega gerações, fé e continuidade.
Angelus é o silêncio do tempo que ora.
An eternalized present

Here, art becomes a visual prayer. It is the present eternalized through creation — as Saint Augustine said: “Time is not threefold but one: the present of the past, the present of the present, and the present of the future.
These three are in my memory, in my attention, and in my expectation.”
This series lives in that sanctified present — where the now holds generations, faith, and continuity.
Angelus is the silence of time that prays.
一个被永恒化的现在
