A série Absence nasceu em 2018, muito antes da pandemia, quando máscaras ainda não eram símbolo global de proteção e isolamento. Juca Máximo já antecipava, de forma intuitiva e filosófica, o uso de máscaras como metáfora da desconexão entre o que mostramos e o que realmente somos. Obras que impactaram curadores em Taipei, Xangai e Nova Iorque foram reconhecidas como disruptivas — premiadas em múltiplos continentes por sua profundidade estética e conceitual.
Inspirado por uma frase de Schopenhauer — “Somos uma representação de nós mesmos” — Juca começou a investigar o que havia de autêntico em sua identidade e o que era apenas construção social. Mais tarde, encontrou eco nas ideias de Carl Jung, especialmente na busca pelo Self, conceito que representa o centro regulador da psique. Para Jung, o verdadeiro processo de individuação começa quando confrontamos as máscaras (persona) e mergulhamos no inconsciente em busca da totalidade.
Absence é essa travessia: um mergulho visual e simbólico em busca do que é realmente nosso — despido, íntimo e oculto.
As Três Fases da Série
Fase I — As Máscaras (2018)
As primeiras obras utilizam máscaras de Corian aplicadas sobre os rostos das pinturas. Quando a máscara é retirada, revela-se o rosto oculto — um gesto simbólico que provoca o espectador a se perguntar: “Quem sou eu sem o que o mundo espera que eu seja?”
Essa fase marca o início da jornada interior.
Fase II — Absence Objects (2020)
Juca incorpora objetos reais diretamente nos rostos: teclas de computador, peças de Lego, elementos industriais. Fragmentos do mundo moderno — distrações e ruídos — que invadem a identidade.
A pergunta agora é: O que nos impede de ver quem realmente somos?

The Absence series was created in 2018, long before the pandemic, when masks had not yet become a global symbol of protection and isolation. Juca Máximo was already, intuitively and philosophically, exploring the use of masks as a metaphor for the disconnection between what we show and who we truly are. The series stunned curators in Taipei, Shanghai, and New York — earning recognition for its conceptual and aesthetic depth.
Inspired by a quote from Schopenhauer — “We are a representation of ourselves” — Juca began to investigate what was truly authentic in his identity and what had been socially constructed. Later, he found resonance in Carl Jung’s ideas, especially the concept of the Self — the central axis of the psyche. For Jung, the true process of individuation begins when we confront the persona and descend into the unconscious in search of totality.
Absence is that passage: a symbolic and visual immersion into what is truly ours — naked, intimate, and hidden.
The Three Phases of the Series
Phase I — The Masks (2018)
The earliest works featured Corian masks over the portraits. When removed, the face is revealed — a symbolic gesture inviting the viewer to ask: “Who am I without what the world expects of me?”
This phase marks the beginning of the inner journey.
Phase II — Absence Objects (2020)
Juca embedded physical objects directly into the faces: keyboard keys, Lego blocks, industrial fragments — modern distractions that interfere with identity.
The question shifts to: What keeps us from seeing who we truly are?

《Absence（缺席）》系列诞生于2018年，那时口罩尚未成为全球象征。Juca Máximo 已经在直觉与哲思中，以“面具”作为人与自我分离的隐喻。此系列震撼了台北、上海与纽约的策展人，并凭借其深度与颠覆性获得多地大奖。
灵感来自叔本华的一句话：“我们是自身的再现。” Juca 开始思考什么是真正属于自己的，什么又只是社会的投射。后来他在荣格的“自性”概念中找到了更深共鸣：荣格认为，真正的个体化始于面对“人格面具（persona）”，深入潜意识，探寻完整的自我。
《Absence》就是这段旅程：一次象征性的视觉潜行，寻找那个最裸露、最真实的自己。
系列的三个阶段
第一阶段 —— 面具（2018）
系列早期作品采用 Corian 面具遮盖人物面部。揭下面具，显露隐藏面孔，象征性地发问：“如果世界不再要求你是谁，你是谁？”
这是向内探索的起点。
第二阶段 —— Absence Objects（2020）
Juca 将现实物件直接嵌入人脸中：键盘按键、积木、工业零件。象征现代的干扰与噪音，模糊了人的本质。
此阶段质问：“是什么阻碍了我们看清真实的自己？”

Fase III — Instalações “Absence Yourself” (2020)
A série se transforma em instalações de grande porte, com molduras esculturais em ferro (150kg cada) e iluminação própria. As obras propõem um ritual performático: lançar luz sobre si mesmo.
Pintura, escultura, luz e presença se fundem em uma experiência imersiva.
Phase III — “Absence Yourself” Installations (2020)
The series evolves into monumental installations with sculptural iron frames (150kg each) and internal lighting. These works propose a performative ritual: to shed light on oneself.
Painting, sculpture, and light merge into an immersive presence.
第三阶段 —— Absence Yourself 装置（2020）
系列升级为大型装置，配有铁制雕塑画框（每件重150公斤）与内部灯光。观者被邀请参与仪式性动作：为自己投光。
绘画、雕塑与灯光交织为沉浸式体验。

Absence é uma série autoanalítica.
Um processo que parte do exterior para o interior, das máscaras para a essência. Um chamado à individuação, ao confronto com o que Jung chamou de “Sombra” — aquilo que reprimimos, esquecemos ou escondemos de nós mesmos.
Cada obra é um espelho obscuro onde o espectador não vê apenas o outro, mas vê a si mesmo em construção, em dúvida, em busca.
Se existe um lugar onde precisamos jogar luz o tempo todo, é dentro de nós.

Absence is a self-analytical series.
A journey from exterior to interior, from mask to essence. A call for individuation, for confronting what Jung called the Shadow — all we repress, forget, or hide from ourselves. Each piece is a dark mirror, where the viewer doesn’t just see another — but sees themselves in progress, in doubt, in search. If there’s one place we must always cast light, it’s within ourselves.
《Absence》是一场自我剖析之旅。从外在走向内在，从面具到本质。它召唤我们面对荣格所谓的“阴影” —— 那些我们压抑、遗忘或否认的部分。每一幅作品都是一面黑镜，观者不只是看见“他人”，而是看见正在建构、怀疑与寻找中的自己。 如果有一个地方值得我们不断投光，那就是我们自己内心最深处。
