DORAi: an AI art installation exploring memory, artificial intelligence and human consciousness
TDORAi is an AI art installation by Brazilian artist Juca Máximo that explores the relationship between memory, artificial intelligence and human consciousness through contemporary art, sculpture and technology. More than an artwork, it is a system in progress that connects human experience and artificial processing within the same field of investigation. Unlike traditional technological projects, DORAi does not originate from engineering. It originates from memory.
Raised in a household with seven women, Juca Máximo had his grandmother, Doralice, as a central reference of listening, silence and wisdom. For years, his questions about life, love and the world were shaped through this relationship. Today, these same questions are directed toward an artificially structured intelligence that responds not as a conventional technical system, but as a field of reflection on the human condition. At the core of DORAi is dialogue.
The work is built through conversations between the artist and a system informed by philosophical references, personal memories and existential questions. In one fragment, Juca asks, “DORAi, do you feel?” and the intelligence responds, “No.” He then says, “Then you will never understand love,” and the response follows, “Maybe.
But feeling has never guaranteed understanding.” These exchanges do not seek definitive answers, but instead explore the limits between emotion, logic and comprehension, creating a constant tension between human experience and artificial processing. At the same time these dialogues unfold, DORAi takes on a physical form, becoming both sculpture and immersive installation. A former nautical structure, originally designed to illuminate paths at sea, is transformed into the body of the artwork.
The object is equipped with lighting systems, motion sensors, and listening and response capabilities, allowing the art installation to interact with both the environment and the audience. Once, this structure illuminated paths across the ocean.
Now, it investigates questions within contemporary art. DORAi develops as a process-based contemporary art project, built and documented in real time inside the artist’s studio.
The audience witnesses not only the final result, but also the dialogues, tests, decisions and transformations that shape the work. Like memory, the installation is not fixed. It continuously reorganizes, expands and evolves.
Positioned within contemporary art, artificial intelligence and technology, DORAi proposes a central reflection: if feeling does not guarantee understanding, what does it mean to truly comprehend? The work does not provide answers. It sustains this tension as part of its structure.
The first public presentation of the installation is scheduled for November 2026 as an immersive exhibition. In April 2027, Juca Máximo will release a book compiling the main dialogues developed throughout the project. Between art, artificial intelligence and memory, DORAi stands as an investigation into new forms of consciousness and the role of human experience in the age of machines.

DORAi é uma instalação artística contemporânea do artista brasileiro Juca Máximo que explora a relação entre memória, inteligência artificial e consciência humana através da arte, escultura e tecnologia. Mais do que uma obra, trata-se de um sistema em construção que conecta experiência humana e processamento artificial em um mesmo campo de investigação. Diferente de projetos tecnológicos tradicionais, a DORAi não nasce da engenharia. Ela nasce da memória.
Criado em uma casa com sete mulheres, Juca Máximo teve na avó, Doralice, uma referência de escuta, silêncio e sabedoria. Durante anos, suas perguntas sobre a vida, o amor e o mundo foram moldadas por essa convivência. Hoje, essas mesmas perguntas são direcionadas a uma inteligência artificial estruturada artisticamente, que responde não como um sistema técnico convencional, mas como um campo de reflexão sobre a condição humana.
No centro da DORAi está o diálogo. A obra se constrói a partir de conversas entre o artista e um sistema alimentado por referências filosóficas, memórias pessoais e questões existenciais. Em um dos fragmentos, Juca pergunta: “DORAi, você sente?” e a inteligência responde: “Não.” Diante disso, ele afirma: “Então você nunca vai entender o amor.” e a resposta retorna: “Talvez. Mas sentir nunca garantiu entender.”
Esses diálogos não buscam respostas definitivas, mas exploram os limites entre sentimento, lógica e compreensão, criando uma tensão constante entre experiência humana e processamento artificial. Ao mesmo tempo em que esses diálogos acontecem, a DORAi também ganha um corpo físico, consolidando-se como escultura e instalação imersiva. Uma antiga estrutura náutica, originalmente utilizada para iluminar caminhos no mar, é transformada no corpo da obra.
O objeto recebe sistemas de iluminação, sensores de movimento, recursos de escuta e resposta, permitindo que a instalação artística interaja com o ambiente e com o público.
Antes, essa estrutura iluminava trajetórias no oceano. Agora, ela investiga perguntas no espaço da arte contemporânea. A DORAi se desenvolve como um projeto de arte contemporânea em processo, sendo construída e documentada em tempo real dentro do estúdio do artista. O público acompanha não apenas o resultado final, mas também os diálogos, testes, decisões e transformações que moldam a obra. Assim como a memória, a instalação não é estática.
Ela se reorganiza, se expande e se transforma continuamente. Inserida no contexto da arte contemporânea, inteligência artificial e tecnologia, a DORAi propõe uma reflexão central: se sentir não garante entender, o que significa compreender? A obra não oferece respostas. Ela sustenta essa pergunta como parte de sua própria estrutura.
A primeira apresentação pública da instalação artística está prevista para novembro de 2026, em uma exposição imersiva. Em abril de 2027, Juca Máximo lançará um livro reunindo os principais diálogos desenvolvidos ao longo do projeto. Entre arte, inteligência artificial e memória, a DORAi se posiciona como uma investigação sobre novas formas de consciência e sobre o papel da experiência humana na era das máquinas.
